Introduction to Geology
Geology is the study of the Earth itself. But contrary to popular belief, geologists don't just look at rocks all day. Of course rocks are important to study, but geologists also study earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers, and the structure of the Earth from the crust all the way to the core. What kinds of techniques do they use, and what have they discovered? Let's find out together in this geology series!

A different view of the past through geophysical soil sensing | Philippe De Smedt | TEDxGhent
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Philippe De Smedt, winner of the Eos Golden Pipet 2013, is an extraordinary archeologist and bioengineer. This promising young researcher is also nominated as ‘the most remarkable Ghentian’ (Strafste Gentenaar). In his early career he was able to detect the outlines of a medieval building complex without actually exposing the archeological site. He is currently working at Stonehenge. If you happen to be around and you see a young man racing on a quad, do not disturb him. It is archeologist without a spade Philippe De Smedt.

In-depth Explanation of What Caused Noah's Flood - Dr. Kurt Wise
Paleontologist Dr. Kurt Wise explores the "geophysics of the Flood" and provides a fascinating look at the processes behind this catastrophic event that happened in the days of Noah. The question of how a global Flood could happen is an important area of research for modern creation scientists. One of the theories used to explain this process was developed by a number of scientists featured in the film. It is known as "Catastrophic Plate Tectonics" and has a great deal of explanatory power concerning the geophysical processes behind the global catastrophe.

Dr. Wise earned his BA in geology from the University of Chicago, and his MA and PhD degrees in paleontology from Harvard University. He founded and directed the Center for Origins Research at Bryan College and taught biology there for 17 years. He then led the Center for Theology and Science at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for 3 years, before founding and directing the Center for Creation Research and teaching biology at Truett McConnell University for the last 7 years. His fieldwork has included research in early Flood rocks in the Death Valley region, late Flood rocks in Wyoming, and post-Flood caves in Tennessee.

Today modern archaeology often works with digital technology. Geophysics has allowed thousands of ancient sites to be located - a huge gain for science.
The dig is no longer the be-all and end-all of archeology. We accompany some archeologists on their journey into the virtual past. Geophysics comprises a range of techniques with various geological and military functions. Geomagnetism is used to locate enemy submarines or potential reserves of oil or other minerals. Now, German and Irish archeologists have teamed up to use it to trace prehistoric grave systems. Researchers in western Germany are applying it to locate ancient procession and pilgrimage routes. Shipping archeologists in Bremerhaven are availing of digital technology to create virtual models of shipwrecks and, in Berlin, archeologists and game designers have also embarked on a joint project. As luck would have it, they scanned every millimeter of a temple in the Syrian city of Aleppo, not suspecting that, soon afterwards, the complex would be largely destroyed in the country’s civil war. Their virtual model is evidence that the study of the past can have uses for the present, just as technologies of the present can help us to study the past.
